Fr Robert Steele

On Sunday 3 August, Margaret joined parishioners gathered in the grounds of our former convent in Pukekohe, for a Site Blessing and Farewell to the former convent before the commencement of the construction of 23 architecturally designed, single-level homes for those aged 65 and over.

The oak tree, planted by Euphrasie Barbier in 1885, continues to be a protected and significant landmark on the property.

To quote from the information pamphlet:

This site of Notre Dame Living holds significant historical and cultural values.  Originally acquired from Ngati Te Ata Waiohua, it became home to the Sisters of Our Lady of the Missions in 1885.  Over the following century, the Sisters established a convent, founded St Mary’s School and Sacred Heart College, taught at St Joseph’s School, and played a vital role in education, pastoral care, and community service across Pukekohe.

Their spirit of compassion, service, and faith continues to inspire what this new chapter will offer: a peaceful, connected village designed for dignified living.

Our prayers and best wishes to the developers, builders, and residents who, in the future, will call this special place, home.
